The Johannesburg Amateur Cup was founded in 2025 by a handful of mates with one tragic problem: actual jobs. Golf had been rationed down to the occasional quarterly corporate day, a scramble, a goodie bag, a sunburn, and home. We wanted more. We wanted the real thing.

So we built it. Three of Joburg's finest courses across three days, individual scorecards, a proper leaderboard, and that glorious five seconds on the first tee where you genuinely believe you're a touring pro, right up until contact.

Parkview Golf Club

One of Johannesburg's oldest and most prestigious clubs, Parkview is a scenic parkland layout routed along the Braamfontein Spruit, tree-lined fairways, small margins for error and greens that have humbled better players than us. It has hosted the South African Open and SA PGA Championship, with historic links to Bobby Locke and Gary Player.

Killarney Country Club

60 5th Street, Lower Houghton · Golf since 1929

South Africa's only Robert Trent Jones design, laid out on a narrow ribbon of Houghton parkland and opened in 1970 as the first course in the country with bent-grass greens. Golf has been played at Killarney since 1929, and today's par-70 layout is all about the tee shot — long, narrow, tree-lined fairways with generous greens as the reward, and timber and water waiting for anything loose.

A classic Johannesburg parkland course of mature trees, narrow sloping fairways and devilish doglegs. Designed by Bob Grimsdell in 1939 and refined by Rob O'Friel in 1999, the Wanderers rewards accuracy, control and smart positioning over raw power, the perfect stage for a Cup decided on the final card.

Individual, 54-Hole Stroke Play

One round at each course. Every shot counts, especially the ugly ones. Your three cards are added together, and the lowest aggregate over all 54 holes lifts the Cup.

Teams, Luck of the Draw

Before a ball is struck, names go in a hat. Teams are drawn at random, so you might carry a total stranger to glory, or be the one getting carried. Combined scores accumulate across all three rounds for the Team Trophy.

The Fine Print

Rules of the Cup

Played under the R&A Rules of Golf, plus a few of our own. Mostly common sense, lightly enforced, ruthlessly remembered.

A Valid Handicap is Mandatory

Bring a current WHS Handicap Index. Playing handicaps are capped at 24 to keep the maths honest.

Count Every Stroke

Stroke play means all of them. Air shots count. That tap-in you missed counts. We don't make the rules, well, we do, but still.

Call Your Own Penalties

Golf runs on honour. So do we. Mark your card honestly, your playing partners have excellent memories and worse manners.

Keep Up, or Be Gently Mocked

Pace of play matters. Ready golf encouraged. If the group behind is filing a missing-persons report, you're too slow.

Sign Off Every Card

There will be a live scoring app, but all cards must still be handed in at the end, and each person in the four-ball must sign off on the cards submitted. Honesty and integrity matter here.

Disputes Settled at the 19th

Rulings are final. Appeals are heard exclusively at the clubhouse bar, beverage in hand, and almost never upheld.

Full tournament regulations are issued to confirmed entrants. Tee times and the team draw to follow.

Fines Meetings

Fines meetings are not a sideshow, they are the tournament. If you don't drink, relax, we've found perfectly humiliating ways for you to take part. And if you're not planning to stay for fines, may we gently suggest a different, more vanilla tournament.

Behold, The Fines Master

The Fines Master is already appointed, this is not up for debate or election. His word is law, his ledger is long, and his memory is regrettably excellent. There is no appeals process. There is barely a constitution.

Attendance Is Not Optional

A formal Fines Meeting is held after every round. Attendance and decorum are mandatory and enforced. Heading home for the night is fine, we all have lives, but ducking out before fines are served is a fineable offence, and a deeply suspicious one.

No Surprises, No Excuses

Every fineable offence is clearly communicated before the tournament begins. You will know exactly how you've sinned. Pleading ignorance at the meeting only earns you a second fine for wasting everyone's time.

Trial By Your Peers

Beyond the official list, any player may nominate a fine. A majority vote decides its fate, including crimes committed well outside the tournament. Yes, that thing from last year is admissible.

Pay, Or Be Cast Out

Failure to complete a fine results in escalating emotional blackmail and, eventually, full social outcasting. The group chat is unforgiving. The nicknames are permanent.

Expect Eggs

Fines are likely to involve eggs. We won't say how. We won't say when. Just make your peace with the eggs now and we'll all get along splendidly.

Fines are part of the tournament, not an afterthought. Show up, take your medicine, and earn your place at the next one.
